How to Connect Your Step Tracker to Upkeep
Upkeep never talks to your watch directly. It reads your steps from Apple Health on iPhone and from Health Connect on Android. Get your tracker's steps into one of those, and Upkeep counts them.
Three things must be true: (1) your tracker's app shares steps with Apple Health or Health Connect, (2) Upkeep has permission to read steps, and (3) in Upkeep, Profile → Step Data Source points at your tracker's app. If one of the three is missing, your steps do not show up.
Step 1: Share Steps From Your Tracker's App
Open the app that belongs to your watch or tracker and find its Apple Health (iPhone) or Health Connect (Android) setting. Menu names change between app versions, so look for “Connected apps”, “Apps and services” or “Health Connect”.
- Fitbit or Pixel Watch (Google Health app), iPhone: follow our Fitbit to Apple Health guide.
- Garmin: in Garmin Connect, open Settings → Connected Apps, then connect Apple Health or Health Connect and allow Steps.
- Samsung Galaxy Watch: on Android, open Samsung Health → Settings → Health Connect and allow Steps. Your watch's steps then come in as “Samsung Health”.
- Apple Watch: nothing to do. It writes to Apple Health on its own.
- Phone only: iPhone counts steps in Apple Health on its own. On Android, Health Connect can count steps with the phone, or you can use Google Fit or Samsung Health.
Some brands do not share steps with Apple Health or Health Connect at all. If yours is one of them, tell us which one.
Step 2: Let Upkeep Read Your Steps
- iPhone: open Settings → Privacy & Security → Health → Upkeep and turn on Steps.
- Android: open Settings, search for Health Connect, then App permissions → Upkeep and allow Steps.
Step 3: Pick the Source in Upkeep
- Open Upkeep and go to Profile.
- Tap Step Data Source.
- Select your tracker's app. The list shows every app that wrote steps in the last 90 days, and it refreshes each time you open it.
Upkeep counts one source per day, so the same walk is never counted twice. A change of source can take effect from the next day. Fix a wrong step count.
Still Not Working?
Open your tracker's app and let it sync, then open Upkeep and pull down on the home screen to refresh. If your tracker is still missing from Step Data Source, tap “Can't find your device? Let us know” at the bottom of that screen and name your device. We read every report.
