What a Work Step Challenge Needs

  • A private group. Only the people you invite can join. Upkeep challenges are private and invite-only.
  • A fair result. Steps come from the phone or watch, not from a number someone types in. Upkeep checks synced days, so the winner earned it.
  • A length that fits your calendar. One week fits a sprint. A month fits a monthly goal. Upkeep Pro or a Creator Pass allows up to 30 days.
  • A target people can reach. Pick a daily target that most of the team reaches on a normal work day. A target that only the most active person can reach makes the rest stop trying.

Set Up a Work Challenge in Upkeep

  1. The host creates the challenge. Install Upkeep, tap to create a challenge and pick a group.
  2. Set the daily target and the length. The target can be 3,000 to 50,000 steps a day. Then pick the length, the rest days per week and the start date.
  3. Share the invite link. Post it in Slack, Microsoft Teams or an email to the team.
  4. Members join free. Each person opens the link on an iPhone with iOS 18 or later or an Android phone with Android 10 or later.
  5. Steps sync from the phone. Upkeep reads steps from Apple Health on iPhone and from Health Connect on Android. A watch or tracker that writes to those apps works too.

The challenge starts at midnight in the host's time zone, so a team in more than one time zone starts at the same moment. Each member's daily steps count in their own local time.

During the challenge, everyone sees the leaderboard and can send kudos to each other. The host can send a reminder to all members. Any host can turn on auto-roll: when the challenge ends, a new round starts with the same people.

Keep It Fair

A work challenge stops being fun when people doubt the result. Upkeep checks synced days. A day that does not look like real walking can be removed from a challenge result. Steps that someone enters by hand never count.

The winner is the person who met the daily target on the most days. Total steps only break a tie. If nobody meets the target on enough days, nobody wins. To learn what a fair step challenge app should guarantee, read How to Stop Cheating in a Step Challenge.

Privacy at Work

Members of a challenge see each other's names, daily steps and which days each person met the target. The host sees the same leaderboard as every member. There is no HR report, no admin dashboard and no link to payroll.

Upkeep has no prizes and moves no money. If your team wants a prize, the host gives it outside the app. Read the Privacy Policy for the full details.

What Upkeep Is Not

Upkeep is a step challenge app for a team that wants to walk more together. It is not a corporate wellness platform. It has no HR reporting, no single sign-on and no admin dashboard. If your organization needs those for a company-wide program, it uses a corporate wellness tool for that.
